Orangeries
Offering a more substantial structure than a Conservatory or Glass Extension Sunroom, the Formula One Orangery celebrates the scale and ornamentation of Renaissance architecture. The hallmark tall Georgian-style windows that define Orangery design are our ’A’-rated PVCu double-glazed frames. Roofs options include the ability to incorporate dramatic glazed lanterns. Inside, a ceiling pelmet can accommodate lighting, whilst the outside gutter is usually hidden by an elegant decorative cornice.

A historical journey
The origins of orangeries can be traced back to 17th-century Holland, where their modern foundation was laid. However, the concept itself may have much older roots, with evidence of similar structures found in 14th-century France. Even the Romans had constructed elaborate greenhouses long before that.
The term “orangery” emerged in the 16th century. Originally, these orangeries were designated as collections of trees that adorned gardens. Yet, with the advent of plant pots, they found their way indoors, adding a touch of nature’s splendor to interior spaces.

The difference between an orangery and a conservatory?
Conservatory

In the past, orangeries and conservatories were distinct in their styles, but nowadays, the lines that once separated them have become less discernible, causing a challenge for homeowners like yourself during the research and buying process. Traditionally, orangeries served as grand and lavish structures designed to cultivate orange trees in large period homes. The combination of solid pillars provided shelter for the oranges, while vast glass expanses allowed the sun's warmth to nurture the plants. Today, orangeries can be found on smaller homes and have evolved into glazed structures, much akin to conservatories. They often feature more robust roofing with the inclusion of lanterns or flat roofs, and an internal pelmet around the ceiling's perimeter, exuding a touch of grandeur. Typically, brick pillars or super-insulated aluminum columns are utilized to maintain their stately appearance.
Orangery

Conversely, conservatories are primarily constructed with glass or polycarbonate panels, seamlessly blending the outdoor surroundings with the indoor space. Though lacking the same solidity and grandeur as orangeries, advancements in technology, such as high-performance glass and thermally efficient features like insulated internal pelmets and super-insulated columns, ensure today's conservatories can be just as impressive and cozy. In this modern era, the design possibilities for both orangeries and conservatories have expanded. Orangeries can now incorporate floor-to-ceiling glass while excluding brick pillars, resulting in an appearance akin to a conservatory, and vice versa. As a homeowner, you hold complete control over the aesthetics of your new room, ensuring that the finished installation meets your expectations and desires, with the added flexibility to create something truly unique and stylish through the incorporation of colors and decorative cornices.
